But that wasn’t all. The manufacturer wouldn’t pay for the required repairs. Instead, they used a loophole to evade responsibility.

Defective Materials On Walter’s Low-Slope Roof
Low-slope roofs get their name because they have a fairly minimal pitch or slope. They’re not as common in the Houston area as roofs with steeper pitches. However, you’ll find them here and there.
A low-slope roof may be made from more than one type of material.
In Walter’s case, that material was two-ply modified bitumen, a specialized product with asphalt and synthetic components.
Back in 2018, we installed the two layers of modified bitumen, one on top of the other as designed. This approach helps maximize protection from the elements. The top layer, known as the cap sheet, was glued as intended to the base layer beneath it.
Glue Problems Lead To A Serious Roofing Issue
High temperatures and frequent sun exposure in the Houston area can take a toll on a modified bitumen roof. Over time, the glue holding the cap sheet in place can lose its stickiness.
When this happens, the sheet can literally slide out of place.
In a properly made cap sheet, this issue takes a long time to develop, if it ever happens at all. However, if the glue holding the sheet down is defective, a failure can occur sooner rather than later.
When Walter contacted us only six years after his roof was installed, we suspected a glue failure right from the start. An inspection of the material confirmed this theory. We found big gaps between the sections of displaced cap sheet and the base layer beneath them.
Fortunately, the problem was reparable.
All we needed to do was re-glue the defective sections and put them back into position. However, this much-needed roof repair would cost a significant sum of money.
The Manufacturer Refuses To Pay For The Roof Repair
Any manufacturer’s materials have the potential to fail prematurely. What really counts is how the manufacturer deals with its product defects.
Some companies readily admit their mistakes and go out of their way to honor their warranty commitments. However, others look for ways to dodge those commitments and avoid footing the bill for a solution to the problem. Unfortunately, Walter’s roofing materials manufacturer fell into the second category.
To be honest, we knew this was a possibility.
In fact, we’d had similar experiences with this company in the past. However, circumstances beyond our control had required us to use them for Walter’s original installation.
A Roofing Warranty Loophole Was Their Way Out
How did the company avoid responsibility? By taking advantage of a gray area in Walter’s product warranty.
This warranty protected him from material failures. However, the manufacturer claimed that, because the roof was still leak-free, it hadn’t actually failed. And they simply wouldn’t budge from this hair-splitting, anti-customer stance.
Providing Walter With No-Cost Roofing Services
Was Walter happy with the manufacturer’s decision? Of course not. And neither were we.
The defect had nothing to do with the quality of our roofing workmanship, which meant we bore no responsibility for it. Nonetheless, we weren’t going to wait around until a damaging roof leak forced the manufacturer’s hand.
So to ensure Walter’s home was fully protected, we covered the roof repair ourselves. That’s right, he didn’t pay a dime.
This decision cost us quite a bit.
